In a press release, IEEE Director Dr. Sarah Lin stated, "This is a significant step toward ensuring consistent measurement practices across global research and development efforts." She added, "We are committed to making our tools and guidelines accessible to everyone."
The new unit system will be implemented gradually, starting with core fields such as aerospace, automotive, and environmental science. A pilot program will be launched in select countries by the end of the year to gather feedback from professionals.
While some experts applaud the move for its potential to reduce errors in calculation, others argue that the transition could introduce complexity and confusion. However, the IEEE emphasizes that all existing software and documentation will remain compatible with the new system.
